Northvolt - Enabling the future of energy
High quality batteries, competitively priced, best in class sustainability
Battery power will enable us to be significantly more environmentally friendly in all we do. We are working to make a compelling business case for batteries over the full value chain
— Tom Johnstone, Chairman of Husqvarna, board member of Volvo Cars, board member of Investor and Industrial Advisor for Northvolt
The future happens when you make it available
Electrification and renewable energy storage are the keys to a carbon neutral society. Batteries will enable the transition. The auto industry alone will need batteries in huge numbers to replace fossil fuels with electricity. The ability to store energy is also crucial to free the world’s energy generation and distribution from coal, oil and natural gas. Northvolt accelerates this transition by building Europe’s largest battery factory.
We share a bold streak, passion for our mission
and are prepared to work hard in pursuit of excellence. We also
enjoy the ride.

Questions & answers
Strong societal and political willingness to move from an oil based energy model to carbon-free energies are creating new trends in electrification of transportation. An increasing mix of renewable energy production adds volatility in power production - it needs better storage solutions. Until now cost has been too high for widespread adoption. We are now able to bring costs down.
Why are batteries so crucial?
Batteries are key in the transition from fossil fuel to renewable energy. Batteries enable massive conversion to sustainable transportation as well as a deep integration of renewable sources in the energy mix.
How will the batteries be used?
Batteries are used in several consumer and industry goods, electric vehicles, white goods and Energy Stationary Storage (ESS) solutions.
If I’m interested in buying cells?
Currently we are partnering with, taking orders from and offering supply options to customers with volume needs exceeding 250 MWh/year. If you’re interested, please contact email@example.com
What is the tipping point?
There are strong indications that when the cost of lithium-ion batteries drops below US$100 per kWh, a number of user-sectors will reach an inflection point where traditional technology is no longer cheaper. This, in turn, will quickly lead to a situation when global demand significantly outpaces existing and planned production capacity.
Why so big?
In order to deliver affordable and high quality batteries and still make production profitable we need economies of scale. We also need deep vertical integration with raw material mining, a high level of automation and robotization. We also need plenty of preferably green, fossil free and attractively priced energy.
Why build a factory in the Nordic region?
Access to clean water, inexpensive, carbon neutral energy with a stable grid is key, and something that the Nordic countries can offer. Furthermore, several critical minerals can be mined in the region. There is strong academic competence at hand, a highly educated work force as well as a large number of multinational companies with strong interest in energy storage and battery technology.
What are the necessary site-selection requirements?
A wide range of conditions are
considered with a few absolutely necessary:
• the site must have at least 500 000 – 700 000 m2 ready for ground preparation 2018 with a complete industrial zoning permit in place
• the site must have a strong realistic potential to extend industrial zoning area to 2 000 000 m2
• the power supply to the site must have an exceptionally strong grid connection
How big is the investment?
The 32+ GWh production site will require a €4+ Bn investment over a period of six years.
How many factories does the world need?
We believe there is a long-term market for 100-150 factories of our size.
