Price, performance, pollution. Choose two.

There’s no reason for battery performance to come at the cost of the environment. And clean shouldn’t mean costly.

That’s why Northvolt batteries are sustainable by default.

And we’ve taken a close look at the manufacturing setup to get there.

We’ve committed to powering cell production with fossil-free energy, invested into innovation of process design to optimize use of resources and established an in-house battery recycling business to reduce consumption of mined raw materials.

Production

Fossil-free energy powering cell production.

CO2/kWh

Northvolt's target for the carbon footprint of cell production in 2030.

Recycled material

By 2030 half of what goes into new Northvolt lithium-ion cells will come from recycling.

The real challenge is to do it right and do it fast

Recycling, and other things worth repeating

Ethical sourcing

Mined with peace in mind

Sustainability goes beyond carbon footprint and emissions, and for batteries it begins with base raw materials.

We’re sourcing raw materials in accordance with international standards and practices, as well as introducing some of our own standards to secure a supply chain free from corruption of people or planet.

And if we’re not extracting it, we’re recycling it – reducing our consumption of fresh raw material through a world-first recycling setup.

Fossil-free energy

Powered by the forces of nature

There’s no getting around the fact that battery cell production requires a lot of energy. But by harnessing the power of renewable energy, we can make an enormous difference to the carbon footprint of battery products.

That’s why, wherever we operate and manufacture, we have a commitment to using clean, locally sourced fossil-free energy.

Recycling

Put recycling on repeat

Northvolt's model for handling end-of-life batteries and circular processes is grounded in state-of-the-art technologies and driven by environmental and industrial logic. We aim to set the gold-standard for battery production.

Circulating valuable metals contained in batteries back into manufacturing not only reduces the need for mining raw materials, it also lowers the environmental impact of batteries and drives down battery costs.

Batteries made from batteries

Recycling No battery lives forever. But containing recyclable materials, they’re always valuable. Recovering used batteries and recycling them into raw materials for new batteries, we’re lowering the demand for fresh material and moving closer to closing the loop on batteries.
